What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast enlargement is one of the most popular Cosmetic Surgery procedures. Small breasts or breasts that have decreased in size following childbirth and breast feeding can be a source of concern or embarrassment to a woman. But breast enlargement surgery is one way to make you feel more confident and feminine again.

Breast enlargement surgery involves surgically inserting an implant behind the natural breast tissue to increase the size of the breast. Breast augmentation is a similar procedure to breast enlargement surgery but is usually conducted to create better symmetry.

You can choose the size and shape of your implant to suit your body shape.

The Procedure For Breast Enlargement Surgery

The Implant is usually inserted through an incision made in the natural crease beneath the breast. It is also possible to make the incision in the armpit or around the edge of the areola. The procedure generally requires an overnight stay in hospital.

A breast enlargement operation will be performed under a general anaesthetic and will take approximately 1-1 ½ hours. A small incision will be made in the crease of the underside of the breast, the armpit or lower edge of the areola. The doctor will advise you on the most appropriate procedure for you.

Once the incision is made, the doctor will create a pocket for the implant to lie in. This may be either beneath the muscle or beneath the breast tissue. Your size and shape will determine the outcome of the position of the implant and will be discussed fully at consultation . Following the surgery you will have stitches (these may be dissolvable) in place, covered with a dressing and a sports bra. You will be advised to have your stitches removed, if applicable, at seven days after your operation, and to continue to wear the sports bra 24 hours a day for up to three months.

Types of Breast Augmentation Implants

There are currently two different types of implant available – silicone and saline. Silicone implants are widely used as they give a more natural shape and feel. The doctor will advise you on the most appropriate implant for yourself and discuss issues specific to the implants such as capsular contracture and when you need to change the implants. Recovery From Breast Enlargement Surgery Following the surgery, you will need to keep your breasts well supported. Your stitches and/or dressings will be removed after seven days, at which time you can return to work.

You may also have drainage tubes in your breasts – these will be removed the day after your surgery, before you go home. Your breasts will be firm and swollen at first, and will take several weeks to settle and adapt a more natural position and feel. By wearing your sports bra, you will feel more comfortable and have the necessary support.

Breast Enhancement with Fat

Breast augmentation or enhancement is a procedure that increases the size of the breasts. Traditionally these procedures are done by using an implant, which may be silicone, or saline implants. Though these procedures are safe and have been around for many decades, there is a lot of fear and anxiety associated with the use of these implants.

The fat transfer breast augmentation procedure involves three steps:

  • Removing the fat using liposuction
  • Processing the fat for optimal survival
  • Injecting the fat into the breast

The fat cells are first removed from the area decided upon by the patient and the doctor. Often this is the buttocks, abdomen, or thighs-common areas that contain excess fat and can be slimmed and toned by removing some of that fat. To remove the fat, the doctor uses liposuction. A cannula, or thin tube, is used to suck out the fat. Next, the doctor processes the fat, using techniques designed to preserve the fat and ensure a high percentage of fat survives the injection.

Finally, the doctor injects the fat into the breast through very small incisions. After the fat is injected, it may take several months before the final results are visible.
