5 signs that show you need a skin health check

Skin care

Posted Date : 28 MAY 2019

Your skin is the window to your body. Be it the teenage acne breakouts or the radiant pregnancy glow or the eventual sunspots of aging.  Your age and your health are reflected in your skin. That’s why the importance of keeping your skin healthy can't be overemphasized.

An unhealthful diet, stress, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, dehydration, smoking, and particular medications can all impact the skin's health.

But how do you know whether your skin is healthy or unhealthy? How can you tell the difference? What does healthy skin look like? Knowing the answers to these questions is the first step in determining how you should be taking care of your skin. And it is also a wakeup call for you to schedule a skin health check with your dermatologist.

There the five signs that let you know that you need a skin health check: Tone, texture, hydration, sensations and change.

Tone:

Consistent tone is a sign of a healthy youthful skin. If your even skin tone starts to fade, you get age spots and other signs of unevenness like Blotchiness, Spots that are dark, light, or red and Dark under-eye circles then it’s time to get your skin checked.

Texture:

Healthy skin looks and feels smooth. And by smooth it means that the skin is not completely smooth, but has tiny peaks around hair follicles and pores. These peaks are consistent throughout the skin, giving it a uniform appearance. Unhealthy skin, however, does not have a uniform texture. If you have an unhealthy skin that has texture related problems like Bumps, Acne, Blackheads, whiteheads, Wrinkles and Scars then it’s time to get your skin checked.

Hydration:

Healthy skin is a hydrated skin. Dead skin cells are constantly shedding, but it's not noticeable to the naked eye. However, when the skin is dehydrated and too many skin cells shed at the same time, the skin appears visibly dry and flaky.  If you have flaky or scaly skin then it’s time to get your skin checked.

Sensation:

If your skin is healthy, you shouldn't feel any unusual or uncomfortable sensations. If you notice that the skin on any part of your body feels strange like Itching, Burning, Stinging, Pulling or Tightness,  then it’s time to get your skin checked.

Change:

It is also very important to know your skin and stay aware of your moles and freckles, keeping an eye on if they’ve grown or changed in any way. If you notice any bumpy, black, bleeding, scabby, or asymmetric growths then it’s time to get your skin checked.

Your skin may change with age. But remember, there are things you can do to help your skin through the process and age gracefully. Check your skin often with your doctor. If you find any changes that worry you, see your doctor.
