Dental myths and facts

Cosmetic Dentistry

Teeth and dental health have been mysterious throughout history, from the belief that cavities were caused by "tooth worms" to believing that harder toothbrush is better for the teeth.  Science and medical advances have long since put these ideas to rest, but dental myths and misconceptions still prevail. Come let’s debunk a few of them.

Myth - Flossing creates spaces between the teeth.

Flossing does not create spaces between the teeth. It in fact, helps prevent decays between the teeth. When you floss, the food debris nestled around the teeth and gums are removed, which helps keep them healthy and free of harmful bacteria.

Myth- Tooth Loss is Inevitable if it runs in the Family

While certain dental conditions are hereditary, maintaining a healthy mouth is something you can control.  Even if your parents lost their teeth, you can stop the cycle from continuing.  Good dental habits such as maintaining a healthy low carb, low sugar diet combined with daily brushing and flossing can prevent you from tooth loss.

Myth - Oral health is just about the mouth

This is simply not true. Oral health is all about general health. Insufficient oral health can lead to many other health problems. For example, gum disease has been associated with pneumonia, stroke, diabetes, and heart disease. If left untreated, bacteria in the mouth can reach the bloodstream and airway passages, leading to many health conditions.

Myth - Kids are not more prone to decay than adults

They just lack the skills to do a good job of brushing. This is why teaching your child good brushing techniques is necessary. Help them until they are good enough to take care of it themselves to prevent future problems.

Myth – toothache means a lost tooth

Some believe that a toothache means that they’ll lose the tooth. But dentists can save even the most worst of infections. So, if you’re suffering from intense tooth decay, make sure that you don’t accept it as lost. Save what you have.

Myth- Harder Toothbrush is better

Dentists recommend using a soft bristle toothbrush to clean teeth and gums.  Using a brush that is too hard or abrasive can actually cause damage traumatizing delicate gum tissue, causing recession of the gums.  In addition, hard brushes can cause tiny abrasions in the tooth enamel and lead to weakening of the enamel over time.

It is important to remember that when it comes to toothy myths, your dentist is the best person to dispel any confusion surrounding the stories.
