Overcome your cosmetic surgery fears to get the look you've always wanted

Posted Date : 25 JAN 2020

Have you been thinking about undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure? Be it for physical enhancement, beautification, correction of a scar or a genetic deformity, you have access to a plethora of options today than people did in years ago.  So if you want to feel better about your breasts or sagging tummy after pregnancy, losing significant weight and getting rid of those male breasts, or reducing the impact of ageing on your body or face, well and good. BUT if you’re like most of us, have fears about undergoing a cosmetic procedure, then just know that, you are not alone.

So what if you’re just really afraid of having a cosmetic procedure, yet you really want to have it done?

Your primary fear has likely stemmed from horror stories that you have heard about people undergoing cosmetic procedures and having complications, or hearing about implants or fillers getting overboard. But, many of these cosmetic surgery horror stories unfortunately, stem from people getting their cosmetic procedures done from an under-experienced Surgeon or team.  Regardless of the source of your fear, it is important to know the steps you can take to calm your fear to move forward with your desired procedure.

Well… here are different ways that you can combat your fear and overcome anxiety:

Do your research and educate yourself about the procedure and the doctor:

  • This is probably the most important step in overcoming your fear, as it is crucial to make an informed and educated decision about your cosmetic procedure and the Surgeon.
  • Understand your cosmetic procedure in detail as much as possible, without frightening yourself by going overboard or watching the actual procedure.
  • Also, research your practitioner or doctor, and find a doctor who is experienced and who has great reviews, as well as lives nearby to where you live as certain procedures can take several sittings.
  • Make sure to visit your doctor’s office for a consultation and ask questions about what to expect both during and after the procedure.

Talk to your cosmetic surgeon about your fear of cosmetic procedures:

  • Asking the doctor as many questions as you want in order to feel more comfortable is totally ok, as feeling comfortable with the surgeon is important in combating your anxiety.
  • A good cosmetic surgeon never rushes through your appointments and does what is right by the patient, and not just what the patient wants.
  • Talking to the doctor also help in setting realistic expectations regarding the procedure, as it’s important to have realistic expectations about results and understand that results vary from patient to patient.

Be comfortable and confident once you want it done:

  • Often patients don’t want people to know that they’ve had a cosmetic procedure done out of the fear of being judged.
  • While cosmetic surgery patients were once viewed as vain, that is not the case today, and people are far more open-minded.
  • Remember that we all want to look good. So be honest, comfortable and confident, so that the others will follow your lead.

Plan your procedure timeline accordingly and get help from family and friends:

  • If you are a parent, take the necessary time off of work and plan for appropriate childcare during the time.
  • Set up a proper recovery station at home with have plenty of refreshments, books, magazines, and whatever else you think you will need while you take time off to rest and recover.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends and family.
  • Don’t get anxious about recovery time and remember that recovery is also temporary.

If you follow these steps, you will have a positive experience and overcome your fear of cosmetic procedures altogether! But, always remember that you should never have something done with which you aren’t 100% comfortable with. Talk to your surgeon about your personal preferences, the potential risks and the expected results and ultimately, make the decision that’s right for you. Now, are you ready to take the first step towards getting the cosmetic procedure you always wanted?
